We are going to learn together about where our drinking water comes from here in Roanoke, Virginia. Not far from where I live is the Carvins Cove Natural Reserve. It is the second largest municipal park in the United States. With over 12,700 acres, this watershed provides water for the majority of the Roanoke Valley population. Protecting this essential component of our regional infrastructure is key not only to our health but also for the survival and biodiversity of the native plants, resident and migratory birds, and other wildlife that call this habitat home. Swimming and camping are not allowed here to preserve the cleanliness of the water, but there are more than 60 miles of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding.
